a letter from CBI co-founder Kush Parmar '02

Dear visitor,

Thank you for visiting the Cruz Blanca Initiative (CBI), a non-profit organization founded and run by Princeton students and alumni. Since co-founding the Cruz Blanca Initiative in 1999, I have had the pleasure of working with inspired student colleagues, compassionate donors, and hopeful communities in Mexico. My vision of CBI has always been the same: to serve as a nexus of these three groups of people and make our shared ideas a reality. We target communities whose dire needs are only eclipsed by their will to help themselves. We undertake projects that will impact even the lives of people who are yet to be born. And above all, we cherish the value of connecting groups of people seemingly worlds apart.

What makes CBI special? I believe CBI represents a singular experience for Princeton students, one that involves cultural, experiential learning within a disciplined framework of ambitious and tangible projects. Every year, a new CBI group is pitched a project by a partner community in Mexico, ranging from a school building, to sanitation systems, to youth athletic facilities. CBI members, committed to our partner communities in carrying out a proposed project, are then held accountable for the critical fundraising, planning, initiation of the project, and their roles as ambassadors.

CBI members are not mere visitors to a development project. They are received in these communities as what they truly are: the primary drivers behind these projects. Very few university students or student-run organizations are able to claim such a thing, and such are the yearly achievements of the inspired CBI group members and leaders.

I hope through this role as nexus, CBI will not only create real, sustainable benefits to communities abroad, but also help bring out important qualities and perspectives in the growing number of Princeton students that continue to participate in this venture.

Thank you very much for your interest and support for CBI.

Yours truly,
Kush Parmar ‘02
